10 Common Myths About Botox

One of the most popular cosmetic treatments performed around the world is Botox for its amazing results. Unfortunately, this household name treatment has a lot of misconceptions surrounding it. Botox is able to provide patients with a more youthful and rejuvenated appearance when injected by a qualified professional using the right techniques. In this article, we will bust a few of the most common myths surrounding Botox treatments.

1. Botox is Immediate

Unfortunately, Botox does not provide immediate results. The effects of are gradual and subtle results usually become apparent within the first 3-5 days. Full results are typically visible after the seven to ten days. This is because Botox works by helping to relax and inhibit the movement of muscles to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. In some case, it may take one or two injections to see full results and complete relaxation.

2. Botox is Permanent

Botox is not a permanent solution to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This treatment only provides temporary results, typically between 3 to 6 months. The length of time that Botox will last, depends on the patient and the amount of times they have received Botox. After this time movement in your muscles will begin to return, therefore wrinkles and fine lines will begin to gradually reappear.

3. Botox is Only for Women

This is one of the most common misconceptions about most cosmetic treatments. Men and women both age and wish to have a younger appearance. Thankfully, more men are opening up to the idea of cosmetic enhancements and are undergoing new treatments every year. Both men and women can benefit from the results that Botox offers. Many men seeking Botox are looking to soften their wrinkles to appear more approachable, as some believe their wrinkles not only make them appear older but also angrier. Due to the stronger facial muscles that men have, a higher dosage of Botox is usually required for desired results to be achieved.

4. Botox Makes You Look Frozen

A major misconception in pop culture is to joke that Botox can make you look frozen or emotionless. This is only true if it is injected by an individual who does not use a proper technique. When injected correctly Botox looks natural and gives patient a more youthful and refreshed appearance. The goal is not to look over filled or frozen, but rejuvenated and young.

5. Botox is Unsafe

Botox has been used for cosmetic purposes for over 20 years and is a completely safe treatment. This misconception that Botox is unsafe comes from the fact that it is thought to be a derivative from botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin is typically connected to food poisoning. It is derived from a protein found in botulinum toxin, but the levels injected into the body are not high enough to be considered toxic.

6. Botox Can Only Be Used When Lines Begin to Appear

It can actually be beneficial to start Botox injections as a prevention method, instead of waiting for wrinkles and fine lines to appear. It is becoming much more common for patients to use these injections as a preventative treatment. If you wait until after the signs of aging, fine line and wrinkles, it may be more difficult to smooth the skin out again. Preventative use of Botox can also help to train muscles to not make certain expressions, lessening the amount of fine lines and wrinkles that can appear due to these repetitive movements.

7. Botox is Just for Wrinkles

Botox can now be used for much more than wrinkles. It has other cosmetic uses that include, lifting eyebrows, treating dimpling of the chin, softening the jawline, and raising corners of the mouth that have begun to droop. Botox has been used to treat migraines by reducing the muscle tension and decreasing the strain that is put on the nervous system. It can also be used to treat excessive sweating, by injections being done in the armpits and forehead. There are many other therapeutic uses for Botox.
